A reading guide

Putting trustworthy AI into practice

Trustworthy AI connects technical choices with responsibility, oversight and the conditions in which a system is used. This reading guide brings together the essays and documented public contributions behind that work.

Start with intent and responsibility

The essays move from making an AI system’s intended outcome explicit to examining autonomy, responsibility and governance. They offer a way to ask who defines success, how a system is evaluated and what happens when its behaviour departs from its purpose.

The European expert-group contribution

Jean-François Gagné served on the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on AI from 2018 to 2020 and was one of the nine co-rapporteurs for the 2019 Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI. The policy pages distinguish that work from other contributions as a member of the group and provide the supporting documents.

Keep the policy context visible

These texts span several stages of AI policy development. An essay’s publication date and any later editorial clarification matter when reading references to proposed legislation. Contributions to an expert group are not the same as authorship of legislation.
