2018–2020 / Member & Ethics Guidelines Co-Rapporteur
From ethical principles to systems people can trust.
Co-led drafting on the implementation of trustworthy AI, with contributions across the expert group’s four published outputs.
I served on the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence from 2018 to 2020. The group brought together perspectives from research, industry and civil society to develop a practical framework for trustworthy AI.
My specific drafting responsibility was implementation. In November 2018, the HLEG chair named Virginia Dignum and me as rapporteurs for the ‘Implementation of Trusted AI’ theme, bringing the wider group’s input into the drafting process.
The 2019 Ethics Guidelines name me as one of nine co-rapporteurs. I also contributed as a member to the Policy and Investment Recommendations, the Assessment List for Trustworthy AI (ALTAI), and the Sectoral Considerations. Together, these outputs connect principles to organizational practice, assessment and public policy.
Recital 27 of the EU AI Act later referenced the HLEG’s Ethics Guidelines and their seven principles. My contribution was to that earlier trustworthy-AI framework; the legislative text was a separate process.
